Clear-looking lake or creek water can still contain microorganisms that make a camping trip memorable for all the wrong reasons. In the Canadian backcountry, the safe assumption is simple: unless a reliable authority identifies the source as potable, treat the water before drinking it, cooking with it or brushing your teeth.
This guide explains what boiling, filtration, chemical treatment and ultraviolet purification actually do, where each method fits and why carrying a backup matters.

Start with the best available water
Treatment is not permission to scoop from the worst puddle in sight. Whenever possible, collect moving water upstream from campsites, livestock, trails and obvious contamination. Avoid water with algae blooms, unusual colour, fuel sheen, mining runoff or other signs of chemical pollution. Standard backcountry treatment methods are intended mainly for biological hazards; they do not reliably make chemically contaminated water safe.
Let cloudy water settle, then pour it through a clean cloth or pre-filter before using your main treatment. This reduces sediment and helps filters and UV devices work as intended.
Method 1: Boiling
Boiling is the straightforward choice when reliability matters more than speed. Bring water to a full rolling boil for at least one minute. Filter, purifier or both?
The words are sometimes used loosely. In general, a filter removes contaminants according to its physical pore size, while a purifier is intended to address a broader range of microorganisms. The label on the product—and independent certification where available—is more useful than the marketing name.
For most Canadian backcountry trips, choose a primary method matched to the area and carry a second method that does not share the same failure point. Examples include a filter plus chemical tablets, or a UV device plus the ability to boil water.
Cold-weather precautions
Water treatment becomes less forgiving below freezing. Hollow-fibre filters can be damaged if water freezes inside them, and that damage may not be visible.
